Stepping Out in Faith: A Journey of Mission and Ministry by Cherlene Carino

  • by

As I embarked on the Thailand-Myanmar Mission Trip, it became a profound step of faith for me and a fulfillment of Matthew 28:18-20 “Go and make disciples of all nations…”.

My preparations extended beyond the physical realm; I devoted myself to spiritual readiness through fervent prayer, both in my quiet time and alongside some close companions. I shared prayer requests with my family, friends, and co-workers in the Children’s Ministry. Additionally, ECC provided training sessions like the Steps of Freedom and Heart for Asia, which helped us to be more prepared for our mission endeavors. When the need arose to raise funds amounting to 25 to 30k, I accepted the challenge with determination, praying, and believing that God would provide for all our trip’s needs. Truly, God granted me the opportunity to earn extra income through working as a Virtual Assistant, enabling me to save for the trip. The Lord also touched the hearts of my friends who generously contributed to my first mission trip abroad, along with our church, Faith Fellowship La Union, and ECC, who supported my mission journey. The mission team also met frequently for brainstorming sessions and mental readiness. We discussed the do’s and don’ts, as well as the expectations and roles for each team member.

During our travel, the Lord gave me undeniable peace through His words, assuring me that He would be with us wherever we went. His favor was very evident as I navigated immigration swiftly, and we experienced favor with our luggage as well. I felt excitement overshadow any apprehension.

During my journey, I gained invaluable insights, affirming my belief in God’s provision, peace, and favor. I delved deeper into self-awareness, discovering facets of myself previously unseen. Moreover, I honed my ability to collaborate with diverse teams, navigating through the tapestry of varied personalities while understanding each other. Immersed in the rich tapestry of culture, I absorbed its nuances and intricacies, enriching my worldview. Interacting with passionate individuals dedicated to serving the Lord was a profound experience, igniting a flame of inspiration within me. Witnessing the transformative power of English as a conduit for sharing the message of Jesus underscored the universality of faith and the boundless reach of His love. Recognizing the importance of family, I sought tangible ways to demonstrate God’s love to them. As I witnessed children worshipping the Lord during our time teaching at the English Camp, I felt immense joy. Despite encountering challenges during the Interactive Adult Learning Curriculum Design and Facilitation Skills Training, the Lord worked in our hearts and within the training itself—guiding us, molding us, and shaping us into vessels of His grace. I was encouraged by the participants’ eagerness to learn and apply their newfound knowledge in their villages, despite struggling with communication due to the language barrier. Overall, I’m blessed to experience a wonderful journey that I’ll forever treasure in my heart. Each encounter and each experience has deepened my understanding of God’s mission and my commitment to serve as His ambassador.

As I bid farewell to this chapter, I carry with me a heart overflowing with gratitude and a renewed dedication to continue spreading the light of Christ wherever I go. For mission exists because worship doesn’t, and as I reflect on Romans 10:14-15, I reaffirm my pledge to pray, advocate, and support the ministries in Thailand and Myanmar.

This journey has been a blessing beyond measure, and I am humbled to have been a part of it. May the seeds we have planted continue to bear fruit, and may God’s love shine brightly in every corner of the world.
